Computing

Computing

At Benton Dene Primary School, we recognise the increasing role of technology in everyday life and the importance of equipping our pupils with the skills and knowledge to use it effectively, responsibly and safely. Our aim is to provide engaging and purposeful computing lessons that develop problem-solving, creativity and logical thinking. Through coding activities, hands-on projects and real-world applications, we foster a love of programming while preparing our pupils for the future. We ensure that our pupils are not only confident in using tablets and digital devices creatively but are also proficient in using PCs for a range of tasks. Our specialist teachers provide high-quality instruction, ensuring all children are supported and challenged appropriately in their learning.

The National Curriculum outlines the computing programmes of study for Key Stages 1 and 2. At Benton Dene Primary School, we utilise the resources and expertise of Teach ICT North Tyneside to ensure a structured and progressive approach to computing across all year groups.

In Key Stage 1, pupils will:

  • Learn what algorithms are and how they are implemented as programs on digital devices.
  • Create and debug simple programs, using logical reasoning to predict their behaviour.
  • Use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content.
  • Recognise common uses of technology beyond school.
  • Be taught how to use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private.
  • Learn where to seek help and support if they have concerns about online content or contact.

In Key Stage 2, pupils will:

  • Design, write and debug programs to accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems.
  • Solve problems by breaking them into smaller parts and using sequence, selection and repetition in their programs.
  • Work with variables and different forms of input and output.
  • Use logical reasoning to explain how algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in programs.
  • Develop an understanding of computer networks, including the internet, and learn how they provide services such as the World Wide Web.
  • Learn how to use search technologies effectively, understanding how results are selected and ranked.
  • Develop skills in evaluating and using digital content critically.
  • Select, use and combine different software and online services to design and create digital content, including data collection, analysis and presentation.
  • Be taught how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, recognising acceptable and unacceptable behaviour online and knowing how to report concerns.

At Benton Dene Primary School, we are committed to ensuring our pupils develop into responsible and confident users of technology who can navigate the digital world safely and successfully.
