At Benton Dene Primary School we believe that a quality R.E curriculum should help children to acquire and develop a knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain; to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and our behaviour, and develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues. As a school, we strive to provide a happy, stimulating environment rooted in Christian values where all children are cared for spiritually, morally, intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally, and where all are valued as individuals. Through our curriculum, we are preparing our children for life after Benton Dene Primary School; living as part of a diverse community and excelling in their future careers. They will be able to flourish as citizens in a pluralistic society. We believe that Religious Education provides an opportunity to celebrate and show awareness of the differences within our school and the wider world. Through learning about different religious and non-religious worldviews, pupils learn to celebrate diversity and challenge stereotypes.
Religious Education at Benton Dene Primary aims to:
- Explore issues within and between faiths to help them understand and respect different religions, beliefs, values and traditions (including ethical life stories), and understand the influence of those individuals, societies, communities and cultures.
- Ensure that all children form their own opinions about religious beliefs and customs and that they develop an understanding and tolerance of people who hold a strong faith.
- Help pupils understand some of the impact of religion throughout the world, its influences on the lives of individuals and communities and its effect on the cultural diversity of their own and other societies both presently and in the past.
- Help pupils develop their social and moral development by encouraging a positive attitude and valuing the beliefs of others, however different from their own.
- Ensure that children enjoy learning about religion because it is taught in a stimulating and interesting way that arouses their curiosity and develops positive skills and attitudes.
- Ensure that children develop a sense of awe and wonder about the world around them.
